Mix Different Patterns in Your Home

Would you like to have a well decorated home but are afraid of mixing too many different patterns together? Here are some steps to take in order to get a cohesive home decor using different patterns.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Select one large colorful pattern on one large object. This will usually be a rug, curtains, or an occasional chair. Try to select a fabric with at least 3 colors that are not neutrals (black, white, gray, beige, etc). Doing more than one large scale pattern in your room can make your room overpowered. Consider using a solid or smaller scale pattern on the other large items that do not get the large scale pattern.

  2. Step 2

Next, select a medium scale pattern on a medium scaled object. This can be an ottoman, a throw on the sofa, or an extra large pillow. This object or objects should have a pattern that incorporates the colors of the large scale pattern. It does not have to have all of the colors, but it should have at least one or two.

  3. Step 3

Finally, select smaller scale patterns on smaller objects. Pillows would be great with a smaller scale pattern. The smaller objects should have at least one of the colors in the larger object.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider using different types of patterns, such as a large floral, a medium stripe, and a small dot. Mixing just floral patterns can be difficult to achieve a cohesive decor.
