Morning sickness associated with pregnancy can be debilitating. Dehydration, time spent away from work and an inability to enjoy one the most special time of their lives makes pregnant women miserable. The symptoms of nausea and vomiting in the first trimester of pregnancy are not limited to mornings alone, and can continue all day long. The good news is that recent research confirms that morning sickness is linked to smarter babies. The better news is that mild to moderate morning sickness can be effectively treated without having to use prescription medications. Natural home remedies for morning sickness can improve quality of life and ease nausea to a great extent. Here is how.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ginger tea
  • Crystallized ginger
  • Peppermint essential oil
  • Kleenex
  • Bananas
  • Avocados
  1. Step 1

Drink ginger tea or eat crystallized ginger a few times in a day to reduce the severity of morning sickness. Ginger has been considered an effective treatment for nausea in traditional medicine. Recent research confirms that ginger extract can provide relief from morning sickness. Consult a doctor for exact dosage when using a ginger extract supplement.

  2. Step 2

Keep blood sugar levels steady by eating six small meals in a day instead of three large ones. Balance out carbohydrates with plenty of protein, and eat foods lower on the glycemic index.

  3. Step 3

Avoid spicy and strong smelling foods. A good reason to stay out of the kitchen, have someone else do the cooking till morning sickness subsides. Also avoid wearing strong perfumes and using scented body lotions and other cosmetics. Bypass the perfume section in department stores entirely.

  4. Step 4

Carry a kleenex or a handkerchief spritzed with a few drops of essential oils to relieve nausea when out and about. Some people like the smell of peppermint essential oil, while others find relief with a citrus essential oil such as lemon or sweet orange essential oil. Avoid flowery smells though.

  5. Step 5

Eat foods rich in Vitamin B6 such as bananas, brown rice, and avocados to ease morning sickness. A couple of research studies confirm the role of Vitamin B6 in helping with nausea related with morning sickness. For severe morning sickness termed as hyperemesis gravidarum, coonsider taking a Vitamin B6 supplement after consulting a doctor.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try sea-sickness or magnetic bands for nausea relief.
  • Take prenatal vitamins in the evening or before going to bed.
