BOOOO HOOO, Where is my dog?!
BOOOO HOOO, Where is my dog?!

Some of us have a dog that likes to keep running away. Hounds are great escape artists because they follow a scent and go. From my simple instructions, you will be able to prevent your dog from running away, prevent him from being lost, and find him if he gets lost.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • time
  • fence
  • dog tags with all numbers
  • paper, masking tape
  • will to succeed
  1. Step 1

This just happened to me today, and after this I have learned about a few things that I must do for my dog so he doesn't get lost anymore.

  2. Step 2

First, if your dog is a hound like mine, chances are he bolts out the second the door is wide open. My dog has escaped around thirty times while we have been home, and five times while we were away. We have a six foot fence around our home and for the most part we are careful. Well then, how does our dog keep getting away right?

  3. Step 3

Simple, he digs. So, the first thing you must do is to put bricks under the fence so he cannot dig under the fence. Also make sure that all sides are closed completely. Kids sometimes open gates and forget about closing them, and so do contractors so you just need to pay attention in regards to that.

  4. Step 4

Oh, and actually, the very first step when you get your dog is to get him dog tags with his name and address and all the phone numbers on it. In my case, I will now get a separate tag with my in-laws' home number on it because that was where he got lost today. By putting all the necessary numbers where you can be reached down, you will increase the chances of finding your dog by 97%.
I say 97% because the other three percent hold the grim outcomes of what my possibly happen to an escape artist.

  5. Step 5

If your dog is expensive, he is not only a friend, he is an investment so don't let him out of your sight. Some mean people like to steal and sell dogs on classified ads and such so pay close attention to him; after all, he is a family member.

  6. Step 6

In order to have your dog avoid cars, you will need to train him that cars are dangerous. Practice leash walking with him and as soon as a car comes by, in a loud voice say, "Car!" "Bad!" and show him to step back onto the sidewalk. You will need to do this everytime you see a car so it is ingrained in him. Hounds tend to forget that cars are dangerous as they are running so teach him that they are by making a big deal about them. Also, make sure your dog knows the neighborhood well by walking him everyday around the block and back. This will increase the chances of your dog coming back home.

  7. Step 7

Finally, if your dog is gone, and has been gone for several hours, just as soon as you realize he is missing, start making signs with his name on it and your contact number. This is especially effective, if your phone has run out of batteries and if you are far from home. Keep your cel phone on you at all time while you search for him. Chances are your dog was exploring and wants to come back but hasn't found his way home, and on the way, some one has caught him and is calling the numbers on his dog tag.

  8. Step 8

If you have followed all these steps carefully, you will minimize the chances losing your dog, and you will have an easier time finding your dog. Good luck, your dog misses you as much as you do him.

Tips & Warnings
  • Put all necessary numbers on his dog tags.
  • Don't wait to put up signs. Diligence works.
  • Pray a lot because prayer works.
  • Teach your dog to be afraid of cars running on the street.
  • I cannot be liable for any damages.
