Change Name After Marriage
Change Name After Marriage

Along with marriage comes changing your name. Most women choose to change their name after marriage, and make it completely official that they have given themselves to their spouse. If you are new to the marital responsibilities, here is how you can legally change your name after marriage.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

After you have received your marriage certificate, you should make a few extra copies. This is the most important documentation you will need in order to properly and legally change your name.

  2. Step 2

Next, you will need to make a stop at your local Social Security Office. Bring a copy of your ID with you and your marriage certificate. They will walk you through the nessacary paperwork needed. Within 10 days of filing your paperwork, the Social Security Administration will notify the Internal Revenue Service. This is most important for your tax return at the end of the year. Without notifying the IRS, you would not receive your forms at the end of the year.

  3. Step 3

You should remember to update your driver's licenses as well. Be sure that you bring your marriage license with as proof of your new name. They may even want to take a new picture, and update all your information. Also, look to see what you need to do to change your vehicle title/registration. You may need to change your name on that as well and get a new one printed out.

  4. Step 4

A few other things you should remember to change your identification with are: Place of employment, schools, banks, credit card companies, insurance, doctors, and utility companies.
