Things You'll Need:
- Electronic ballast
- Wire nuts
- wire strippers
- diagonal cutters/needle nose pliers
- Nut driver
-
Step 1
Once you have have all of your supllies the first thing you want to do is TURN OFF THE POWER. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CHANGE THE BALLAST WHILE THE POWER IS ON. Is does not feel good at all when you get electrocuted by these. It is also best if you wear gloves. Ballast can get very hot and can cause severe burns or inguries.
-
Step 2
Once the power is off remove the flourescent light bulbs so you can access the ballast pan. Once you can reach the ballast remove to expose the ballast.
-
Step 3
Once the ballast is exposed, expsecially for those of you who did not turn off the power, the first thing you want to do is cut the black wire and cap it with a wire nut. This kills power to ballast in the case that power is still on. so now the rest will go by pretty fast.
-
Step 4
Next you want to cut the remainding wires. Make sure you cut them as close to the ballast as possible this way to dont end up short when installing the new ballast.
-
Step 5
Next, loosen the nut holding the ballast in place using your nut driver or screw driver. Now remove the ballast and properly dispose of.
-
Step 6
Now it is time to install the new ballast. Make sure you wires match up when securing the ballast in place. Your black, white, and Yellow wires should be in the middle of the light fixture and your blue and red wires should be towards the end of the light fixture.
-
Step 7
Once in place you now want to strip all the wires at the end. Dont strip to much of the wire you only need enough to fit inside the wire nut. you dont wont any part of the exposed wire sticking out passed the wire nut. Now just match up the colored wires and cap them with wire nuts. Yellows to yellows, blues to blues, reds to reds, white to white, and black to black. It does not matter witch wire goes with witch when matching the colors. if there are two blue wires hanging out of the fixture it does not matter to witch blue wire on the ballast it is connected to. This goes the same for the other colors.
-
Step 8
Now that the new ballast is wired up you want to replace the ballast pan and flourescent lights. Once you have done this turn the power back on, since it was off the whole time, and turn on your light switch to test the lights to make sure the ballast is working properly
