Use a Crimping Iron

Hair 'crimping' has been around for quite some time, and whether you love it or hate it, chances are you've tried it! The crimping iron was actually invented for Barbara Streisand in the late 70's, but it is typically identified with the wild hairstyles of the 80's. Using a crimping iron is pretty easy and you can definitely stand out in a crowd with this style!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shampoo/Conditioner
  • Heat-activated Styling Product
  • Blow-dryer
  • Crimping Iron
  • Hairspray
  1. Step 1

Start by washing your hair with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner; rinsing with cool water. If you have damaged hair, make sure to use a leave-in conditioner before crimping.

  2. Step 2

Apply a heat-activated styling product. This will protect the hair from any damage that the hot crimping iron may cause.

  3. Step 3

Blow dry the hair on a cool setting, or allow the hair to air-dry; make sure it is completely dry before beginning. Ironing damp hair can actually singe the ends of the hair.

  4. Step 4

Plug in the crimping iron and turn the heat onto the setting as required per the manufacturer's instructions. Avoid setting the iron too hot as it may cause damage!

  5. Step 5

Section off the hair into four sections, and work in small subsections. Hold each subsection out, place the crimping iron close the the scalp (but do not touch it) and press the iron closed. After several seconds, release the hair from the iron. Work your way down the strand until the entire section is complete. Repeat this all over the head.

  6. Step 6

For added volume, hold the head down and spray with a firm hold spray. Avoid brushing the crimped hair as it WILL frizz out!

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember that crimping is temporary! It's gone with one shampoo, so have fun with it!!
  • Avoid crimping hair that is over-processed or bleached. To do so may result in further damage by split-ends.
