Step 1
Make use of hooks. Getting things up off the floor will help your mud room look more organized. Hooks can hold book bags, coats and other bags. If a child won’t make use of the hooks provided, then maybe they should be in charge of organizing the mud room for a few days before he/she is allowed to watch TV or play with friends.

Step 2
Use a box for anything that has to leave your house. Some people call this an “outbox”. It can hold DVDs that need to go back to the store, library books, mail, presents, or anything that needs to be somewhere else besides in your home. If you check this box whenever you leave the house, you’ll have a better chance of getting things back to where they belong limiting the late fees you have to pay.

Step 3
Let it be pretty. Don’t be afraid to get some nice looking baskets or bins to store on a shelf. Just because there is a lot of junk stored here, doesn’t mean it has to look like junk. The more items you put into boxes, the better the area will look.

Step 4
Make it easy to store shoes. Even though those fancy shoe racks look nice, most people will not take off their shoes and place them on a rack. When you come in the door you want to slip off your shoes and put them somewhere out of the way. No one wants to bend down and pick up their shoes again. After you’ve been out all day, it’s probably not a good idea to touch your shoes anyways. You can use a box or shelf to put your shoes in. You can turn a box or bin on it’s side and have each person put the shoes they wear most often in their designated box. Those shoes they don’t wear as often can be put on another shelf.
