How to Zip and Unzip Files and Folders (in Windows XP)

"Zipping" a file is a feature on Windows that allows files and folders to be compressed so they can be processed faster and use less drive space. Compressed/zipped folders work the same way as unzipped/uncompressed folders/files.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

• Windows XP operating system

1. HOW TO ZIP A FILE/FOLDEER:
   
   Go to and select the file or folder that you want to compress/zip.

2. Right click on the file/folder/icon and select "Send To".

3. In the "Send To" menu, select the option that says "Compressed (zipped) folder".

4. Allow the file/folder/icon to compress (time depends on size of file/folder).
   
   Your file/folder is now ZIPPED/COMPRESSED.

5. HOW TO UNZIP A FILE/FOLDER (so that it can be used):
   
   Double-click or right-click and chose "Open" on the file/folder you wish to unzip.
   The file/folder will open.

6. The file/folder/icon will display withOUT the zip.

7. Copy/paste or drag the unzipped file to the desired location, where it will be saved so can work with it.

8. Close the zipped file/folder. If you wish, you can delete it, as the file/folder that you saved in Step 7 is your working/unzipped copy.

Tips & Warnings

• Although these steps apply to the Windows XP system, you will find that they basically work the same for any Windows operating system.
