How to modify an AVRISP mkII to provide 5V power to target board

The AVRISP mkII is a great USB In-system programmer for Atmel AVR microcontrollers. However, one feature is missing: the ability to power the device you want to program. With this modification you'll no longer need a separate power source in order to program!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • AVRISP mkII usb programmer
  • soldering iron
  • solder
  • 22 awg wire
  • toggle switch
  • Drill + drill bit
  1. Step 1

    Open the case by pushing on the tabs on the corners on the bottom.

  2. Step 2
     

    Here is where we pull +5V from - the solder point of the internal LED closest to the edge of the board. Solder a piece of wire to this point.

  3. Step 3
     

    Here is the pin that connects to +5V on the ISP header. Solder a piece of wire to this point.

  4. Step 4

    Connect the two wires with an on/off switch.

  5. Step 5

    Drill a hole in the case for the switch and mount the switch. I used a 1/4" drill bit and drilled the circle mark on the top half from the injection molding process.

  6. Step 6
     

    Reassemble the programmer and you're done!

Tips & Warnings
  • You can use any kind of switch as long as its on/off (not momentary!) and you can fit it in the case.
  • This modification is done at your own risk and will probably void your warranty!
  • This is only for low current target boards - the USB port can only source 500mA max. Do not overload your usb port! Most ports are protected, but damage may occur if it is not!
