How to Remove a Deck Board

You may need to remove a deck board for any number of reasons like, warping, staining, or cracking. Fortunately it isn't to hard to remove a deck board and avoid damaging the surrounding surface.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

First look to see if the deck board is attached with screws or nails. If you need to remove a deck board that is attached with nails skip to step 4.

  2. Step 2

If it connected to the joists with screws take the screws out. You should be able to to see that the board is now loose and sitting on the joists.

  3. Step 3

You can remove it either by going below the deck and pushing it up and out of its spot or by using a prybar to lift the end of it out.

  4. Step 4

If the deck board is attached with nails there are two ways to get the deck board out. The first is to go below the deck and hammer the board up, pulling the nails out as you do.

  5. Step 5

If you can't get below the deck, or the nails are being particularly stubborn you will need to cut the deck board.

  6. Step 6

Take a drill and cut a hole in the center of the board. Now take either a jigsaw, or a keyhole saw and cut from the hole to each edge of the board, essentially dividing it in two.

  7. Step 7

To remove the deck board grab the board where you cut it and pull up using the leverage to pull out the nails from the joist. To remove the other half repeat the process.
