How to Sharpen Mower Blades
Everyone should sharpen mower blades every 6 weeks or so during mowing season. Sharp blades not only make mowing easier, but also cause less damage to your grass. Does this Spark an idea?

The first step is to remove the blades. It's vital to ensure safety while you sharpen mower blades so unplug the spark plug wire to be sure the engine doesn't accidentally start while your working on it.

Either turn the mower on its side or on its back, and take a piece of wood and wedge it into the mower deck so the blade can't move.

Next take a wrench and remove the bolt holding the mower blades to the lawn mower. Once removed you can take off the mower blades. Be sure not to lose the bolt. Careful, the blades can still cut you.

When you take off the blades to sharpen them you have a good opportunity to clean out the inside of the mower of caked up grass.

Clamp the blade down to a worksurface. Get a metal file to sharpen the blades.

Using smooth stroke moving toward the cutting edge of the blade gradually file out and flat spots, nicks, and dents. Make the same amount of passes on each blade to keep the mower blades balanced.

Once you sharpen mower blades to the desired edge check and make sure they are still balanced by attempting to balance the blade like a see saw, with what ever is available.

Make any additional filing to balance the blade.

Reinstall the blade on the lawnmower using the bolt from before. Don't forget to replug the spark plug when you finish.
