Everyone is trying to save money these days. It's no wonder with the economy having everyone scrambling to make ends meet every month. Why not save money and have a little fun at the same time? How? With the newest rage in social networking...Twitter! Twitter can help you save money by helping you keep a journal of your daily spending habits. So, if you want to save money, read on to find out how to get started

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A computer
  • A Twitter account
  1. Step 1

First, if you haven't already done so, you need to set up a Twitter account. It's simple. Just go to Twitter.com, click on the "Get Started" button and enter a few pieces of information.

  2. Step 2

Next, go to tweetwhatyouspend.com and enter your Twitter username and password as well as your e-mail address.

  3. Step 3

Now, you are ready to save money by keeping a journal of your daily spending habits. Every time you spend money on something, you record the item description and price in your cash journal. You can further save money by categorizing your spending as well as sharing purchases you aren't too proud of on the Tweet What You Spend "Wall of Shame".

  4. Step 4

You can also submit an entry directly through Twitter. Just type 'd twys' plus your entry and price. For example, d twys coffee 4.75. You can also categorize your purchase by typing the category after the price. This allows you to make journal entries immediately after a purchase through Twitter on your mobile phone. You can also set up daily spending limits and receive alerts when you near the limit.

  5. Step 5

Keeping a cash journal can help you save money by allowing you to identify areas of overspending. For example, after keeping a journal you may realize you spend $200 a month on lattes and therefore you can choose to cut back in that area and save money.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keeping a cash journal will also aid you in creating a budget, which can further help you save money.

on 9/23/2009 Great tips! I have another one for you, and this one is for health related expenses...

Our company, change:healthcare, just launched a new Twitter service that lets you look up prescription costs and medical information via Twitter. You get an instant response when you send your question via direct message in the proper format.

The user account on twitter is @askch and you can find out all of the different uses at http://ask.changehealthcare.com. Uses already defined: find a generic alternative for a namebrand, find the cost of a prescription in your neighborhood, get a definition for medical terms, and find generic discounts for a prescription too.
