Back up your BlackBerry's data on a regular basis to protect it.

Backing up your BlackBerry data includes all media, phone book contacts, addresses, favorites, calendar appointments and meetings among other settings. It is a good practice to back up your BlackBerry phone's data at least once every month. Although the BlackBerry's operating system is stable, the device is not immune to rare software crashes.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install the latest version of the BlackBerry Desktop Software program. Go to BlackBerry.com and navigate to "Support," "Downloads" and download the BlackBerry Desktop Software for your device. Install the software on your computer.

    • 2

Open the BlackBerry Desktop Software and connect your BlackBerry phone to the computer using the USB data cable supplied by the vendor. The BlackBerry Desktop Software will automatically detect the phone and start the synchronization process to sync the phone's calendar and appointments with Microsoft Outlook on your computer. Cancel this process, as it is not needed for backing up and restoring your BlackBerry phone data.

Click on the "Backup and Restore" link on the BlackBerry Desktop Software screen and click on the "Advanced" button. This allows you to customize your selection of databases to back up. Select the appropriate databases from the menu on the right side and click on the arrow pointing left to drag these databases to the computer's desktop. Click on the "Close" button and click "Yes" to save changes to the backup database. Check the computer's desktop to verify that the appropriate backup file is created.

Restore your data. A process similar to the back up procedure is followed to restore a database on the BlackBerry phone. Click on the "Backup and Restore" link on the BlackBerry Desktop Software screen and click on the "Restore" button. From the File browser, select the backed up file from your computer with a file extension ".ipd." Follow the screen prompts to replace databases on the device with the corresponding databases in an existing backup file.

Tips & Warnings

  • Only the databases on the phone's SIM card will be backed up and not those on the memory card. Memory card contents can be backed up using memory card readers or by dragging and dropping the contents to a backup folder on your computer.

  • Use the "Safely Remove Hardware" option before unplugging the phone from the data cable connected to computer. This ensures that the device will not be damaged due to sudden power loss or surge.

  • The restoring process replaces the entire database available on the device with the backed up database. Make sure you have backed up any changes in databases from your phone so that they wont be lost.
