Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • possible permit
  • treated 4x4 posts
  • treated 2x8
  • treated 2x6
  • #16 galvanized nails
  • 3" deck screws
  • 5"x5/16" lag screws
  • Post anchors
  • 2x6 joist hangers
  • tape measure
  • hammer drill/masonry bit
  • circular saw/miter saw
  • 4' level
  • chalk line
  • concrete/wheelbarrow
  • shovel/hoe
  1. Step 1

The first thing that you want to do is obtain a building permit. check with your local building department, they may even have suggestions or an outline, you may have to submit a plan. Determine the amount of material you will need. This project will probably require help from a friend or that handy brother in law.

  2. Step 2

Once you find out whether or not you need a permit you can get started. Install your ledger board, which will be the 2x8 around the house. Place it approximately 2 1/4" below your entry doors, this will allow for the finished 2x6 deck boards. Pre-drill for the lag bolts every 2' and use your level. It helps to mark a line at each end of the house by using the chalk line.

  3. Step 3

Determine how wide that you want the deck and set your concrete piers/ post base or do your own with mixable concrete and anchor bolts with separate post bases, place 4' apart. If you do the mixed concrete dig holes 12"x12"x 8" deep. Next attach a 2x8 ledger to the end of one of the ledgers on the house, use your level. place a 4x4 post at each end of house onto the concrete bases, then cut the 2x8 to span the distance. Attach to side ledgers and 4x4 post. Measure diagonally from corner to corner to see if square. Adjust if needed to square up frame.

  4. Step 4

Repeat the steps all the way around the house. Then set all the posts, do not cut the posts off, temporary bracing may be required as you go. If the deck is 30" or higher from grade, you must put up a railing 36" high.

  5. Step 5

Install the joist hangers 16" on center at the 2x8 ledgers on the house and the outer frame. Also nail from the ledgers into the joist with #16 galvanized nails. Install the 2x6 decking boards. Use the deck screws, use a #16 Galvanized nail to space in between boards. When all the boards are down install the railing if needed by using the posts and 2x material.

  6. Step 6

If you need a staircase because the distance to grade is 30" or more, add stringers which you can get pre cut at Lowe's or Home depot. Make sure to have concrete at the base pad, add risers and treads using the screws.
