Things You'll Need:
- eye shadow in desired shades
- eye shadow brushes
- eye makeup remover
- mirror
- light source
- makeup primer (optional)
- face powder
-
Step 1
The eyelid area should be clean and free of makeup before you start. Make sure all your tools are clean, and your work area well- lit.
Locate your brow bone- whether or not you plan to highlight it, it will serve as a reference point. Brush your eyebrows into place, removing any unwanted stray hairs. Apply primer or face powder over the eyelid, if using- this can extend the staying power of the eye shadows, but it can feel heavy to those unused to wearing eye makeup. -
Step 2
Your eyeshadow colors will serve to highlight or downplay the areas of the eyelid where they are applied. For a smoky look, the darker of the two will be applied more heavily across the eyelid than for a daytime look. A classic daytime look consists of the lighter color being applied from the brow line to just a millimeter above the lash line, and the darker color applied in a thin line just above the lash line, akin to a liner. A reversal of this can yield a smoldering night look- apply the darker color from lash line to just below the brow line, and the lighter color in a thin line just below the brow line.

Step 3
Less dramatic looks can consist of a lighter shade being applied all over the eyelid, and the darker shade in the crease of the eyelid. The darker shade can also be applied from the crease down to the lash line. Experiment with different looks and shades until you have one or more that you can execute well and look good to you. And remember, it's only makeup- have fun!
