Amish Friendship Bread is a gift that gets passed from friend to friend. You can either give the starter as a gift or the actual bread itself makes a wonderful present too. Either way it makes the perfect present for any occasion.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 pkg Active Dry Yeast
  • Milk
  • Water
  • All Purpose Flour
  • Sugar
  • Zip-lock bags (gal size)
  1. Step 1

To make the starter you will mix 1/4 cup of heated water (110°F).

  2. Step 2

Dissolve the yeast in the water for about 10 minutes.

  3. Step 3

While the solution sits, mix together flour and sugar in a 2 quart glass or plastic container(not metal!). Mix this thoroughly to prevent the flour from clumping once you add milk.

  4. Step 4

Gradually mix warm milk(110°F) and the yeast solution to the flour and sugar. Cover the mixture with a cloth or loose fitting top. The mixture will bubble up.

  5. Step 5

Once the mixture has bubbled up quite a bit you can transfer the mixture to a zip-lock bag(gallon size) and store in a safe place like a cupboard. Do not refrigerate. Write the date on the outside of the bag with a felt tip pen/sharpie. This is day one.

Tips & Warnings
  • The starter will rise and ferment throughout the 10 days. This is normal.
  • Do not use any metal utensils or mixing bowls.
  • Do not refrigerate.
