How to Replace Your Home Phone With Skype
Skype can be more affordable than most land-line phone plans and offers unlimited national as well as international calls. You can replace your home phone with Skype, but you will have to pay a subscription fee.

1
Go to Skype.com and sign up for an account. Download the latest version of Skype if you haven't already done so.

2
Determine which plan will suit you best. Skype-to-skype calls are free, but since you're replacing your home phone, you'll need a subscription, which allows you to make unlimited calls. Subscription plans vary according to your calling range. If you only make phone calls within the U.S. & Canada, you can sign up for the Unlimited North America plan for $7.99 a month, at the time of publication. Other plans increase in price.

3
Get an online number, which allows you to receive unlimited calls. The cost of an online number depends on how long you want to keep it. You get a discount when you have a subscription, so it would cost either $18 every three months or $60 for a full year, at the time of publication. You don't lose your online number once that time is up; you'll just need to renew it.

Decide what you want to use as a phone -- a headset with a microphone or a VoIP phone. Headsets are less expensive but wired headsets can be a hassle. VoIP phones are easier to use as home phones since they look and work like actual land-line phones. Skype has many phones from which to choose, or you can purchase a phone elsewhere.

Tips & Warnings
Getting set up with Skype can be a bit confusing, but don't let that keep you from trying it out. Personally, I waited to try Skype because I found it too complicated, but I wish I would have tried it sooner because it has saved me tons of money. Also, it's just as easy to handle as a regular phone once you get used to it.
