Maybe it's long past time to quit your job, but you're not quite sure how to let your employer know you're leaving. There is no right or wrong way to quit a job, but there are some tips that might help make the transition more comfortable for you.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Resignation Letter
  1. Step 1

Make sure you have another job or source of income lined up before you give up the job you have, unless you don't need the money because your spouse makes enough income to cover the loss.

  2. Step 2

Write out your resignation. Keep it brief, professional and leave any personal issues out of it. Even if your boss is the meanest person in the world, you don't want to tell him that. You may need a reference at some point in the future. It's best not to burn bridges.

  3. Step 3

Tell your boss in person. If you are not able to go into the office, tell him or her on the telephone. Do not tell anyone else in the company until you tell your superior, though. this is just a matter of respect. Do this even if you feel little respect for the person.

  4. Step 4

If at all possible, give the company a couple week's notice. This is not possible in all cases. If you are starting a new job and they need you in a week, then offer to give them a week.

  5. Step 5

Relax. Most employers today realize employees will not stay with a company forever.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep a copy of your resignation letter in case there is ever a question about when you quit or how you quit.
  • Communicate. Ask your boss what kind of reference she will give you if someone calls in the future and asks. If she or he doesn't plan to give you an excellent reference, it might be better to leave them off your resume.
  • Even if you are leaving on less than ideal terms, your notice will be served before you know it and you'll be able to move on with your life.
  • Try to never quit a job in the heat of the moment. Even if you do ultimately decide to resign, try to do so once the anger has passed and you can look at things objectively. You don't want to make a rash decision.
