Things You'll Need:
- sewing machine, 2 pieces of fabric (flannel preferred) at 1.5 yards, matching thread, scissors, pins, pencil, plate or box.
-
Step 1
1. Pre-shrink fabric by washing, drying and then iron. This will guarantee no movement or pulling of the fabric after it has been sewed.
2. Take your thread (I suggest using a funky color thread that will pop off the blanket but that is also complementary) and add it on to a bobbin. Then thread the top and the underneath (the bobbin) of your sewing machine. To be sure that your machine is in full working order and doesn't need any repairs, read the manual before using and sew a few stitches on some scrap fabric. -
Step 2
3. Lay your to pieces of fabric front sides together. I highly suggest using to different fabric designs that are complementary for added punch.
4. Pin the pieces of fabric together all the way around the edges.
5. Sew around the outside edge leaving 1 to 1.5 inch space around. Stop 5 inches from the end and reverse to seal the edge.
6. Cut the pointed edges off around the outsides of the stitching. -
Step 3
7. Now reach your arm inside the whole you have made and flip the blankets right sides out. Use your finger to push the corners out as far as possible.
8. Iron down flat. Tuck in the fabric that was not sewed down at the 5 inch hole that is still left open. That way when you sew the outside edge it will be stitched shut.
9. Sew around the outside edge of the blanket using .5-1 inch around. I highly suggest using a fun stitch if you have an embroidery machine or a regular zig-zag can spruce up any baby shower gift.
10. Last step, take a plate or a box. Place it in the middle of the blanket. Use a pencil to trace the outside of the item you chose. Now sew over the pencil mark. This will keep the middle of the blanket from shifting and separating.
