Sharpen your skills and build a portfolio. Before you start looking for a photography internship, it's important that your skills are developed and up to date. An internship will not teach you how to take pictures; most jobs require those who already have a handle on taking pictures.

Contact local photographers. Professional photographers may take in a couple of aspiring photographers to mentor. Don't expect to earn big bucks apprenticing for someone; these are usually not paid or they may come with a fee. If only workshops are available, take advantage of this opportunity to work side by side an experience photographer.

Speak with a career counselor. School counselors and career centers are exposed to different kinds of opportunities coming through their doors from various industries. You should be proactive in contacting them to gain access to a database of internships.

Contribute to a local newspaper or media company. Many photographers jump start their careers through journalism. This is a great experience for any aspiring photographers, even if you don't get paid at the beginning. You will be exposed to a variety of subjects, as well as learn storytelling techniques that are pertinent to taking great pictures. Great institutions like National Geographic and Hearst Media have internships available for students.

Use social media to get a photo internship. Search your favorite photographers or companies on Facebook or LinkedIn, and add them to your friend's list. They may post opportunities as they become available, or you can directly contact someone who's established to connect you to his network.

Brainstorm other entry routes. Since competition for prestigious internships are huge, you should think of other areas where you can get an internship. Local zoos may need photographers. If you have another hobby or career, think of ways you can combine these two passions. Think of freelance opportunities and build your career by persisting and being a go getter.
