Step 1
Replace the air filters on a regular basis, approximately once a month. The opening that holds the filters typically opens by unscrewing several screws, and swinging the door open. The filter slips out, and a new filter can be inserted. Measure the opening and purchase filters that are an exact fit. Insert them according to the arrows on the filter.

Step 2
Disconnect the power to the air conditioner before working on any of the appliance's parts, such as the fan.
-
Step 3
Check the fan if the air conditioner is making noise. Debris that gets into the area can get caught on a blade and cause it to bend. When this happens the appliance does not work efficiently and can result in expensive repairs. Fix or replace the blade.
-
Step 4
Clean the outside of the air conditioner, so that dirt and leaves do not cling to the outer fins of the machine.
-
Step 5
Straighten any fins that have been bent. When the fins are bent it can restrict the air flow. Fin combs can be purchased at the home supply store.
-
Step 6
Check the unit to make sure it is level. Over time the movement of the air conditioner can un-level the appliance, thus causing it to run less efficiently. Adjust the mounting if it is not level
-
Step 7
Lubricate the fan motor as necessary. In some models you will need to remove the fans to do this. Don't forget to first turn the power off.
