**Scan for Viruses and Malware**
You have (or at least, you should have) anti-virus protection on your computer. Perhaps MacAfee Antivirus, or something similar.
Run a scan for virus and other malware. If you haven't in a while, adjust your settings to run a deep scan (rather than the usual default 'Quick Scan'), to make sure there are no nasty bugs slowing things down.
Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool, and the AVG Free Antivirus/Anti-spyware software are two good freebies that can help protect your system.

**Get Up to Date**
Make sure your operating system and browser are both up to date, complete with the latest patches meant to improve security and enhance operation. This is especially important for the newest systems, which usually need a lot of tweaks and adjustments before they work smoothly and are fully compatible with other software.
Your browser Tool and Help menus are usually the best starting points for updating your software. Also search your computer for the term 'update' to find system-specific instructions for your computer.

**Manage Your Add-Ons**
Lastly, check your browser' s add-ons. These can slow your internet surfing way down, either due to compatibility issues, or from a less-than-innocent add-on that's wormed its way into your system.
The basic strategy is to disable all add-ons, and then re-enable them one at a time. If a particular add-on is causing problems, you'll notice it, as soon as it's enabled again.
In both Internet Explorer and FireFox, you can manage add-ons from the Tools menu.
