How to Count Specific Words in a Microsoft Word Document

Most people know how to use Microsoft Word's count feature that displays how many total words are in a Microsoft Word document. But what if you just wanted to know how many times a specific word appeared in your MS Word document? Read this article to find out how.

Things You'll Need:

  • Microsoft Word 2003
  1. Step 1

    Microsoft Word has a feature that will display the statistics of your document by clicking on Tools in the menu bar and choosing Word Count. This will give you the number of pages, words, characters, etc. in your document.

  2. Step 2

    But if you need to know how many times a specific word occurs in your Microsoft Word document, then you will need to use Microsoft Word's "Find" feature for this.

    With your MS Word document open, press CTRL+F (or go to Edit > Find). This will display the Find dialog box.

    Type the word that you want to find the number of occurrences for in the "Find What" box, and check the box next to "Highlight all items found in".

    To find out how many times the specific word appears in your document, press the "Find All" button. You will see the number of times the word appears in your MS Word document displayed in the Find dialog box. When you're done, just click "Close".
