This article will give a detailed description on how to pop-up or stand up on a surfboard. If you practice these techniques you will be standing up and surfing like a pro.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Surfboard
  • Ocean
  • Waves
  1. Step 1

Find a beach that is not so crowded where the waves are about 1 to 2 foot. When you get to the beach don't go in the water yet. Lay your board down on the sand and practice pushing up and standing up. Lay down on the board flat and to pop-up put both of your hands flat on the deck of the board and push straight up, then bring your feet underneath you. Do this as many times as you want, until you feel comfortable doing it.

  2. Step 2

Once you feel comfortable popping up on land, head for the water. Paddle out to the line-up and wait for a nice small wave. When you see the wave coming start paddling for it.

  3. Step 3

As you are paddling for the wave you will feel when the wave picks you up. As soon as you feel the wave starting to pick you up, give it 1 more strong paddle before attempting to pop-up.

  4. Step 4

After that last strong paddle it's time to pop up. Put your hands flat on the deck of your board and push up. Extend your arms fully and bring your legs underneath you. This should be easier in the water than on land. If you practiced enough on land it should be no problem. Stand up on your board and surf away! More surfing lessons to come!

Tips & Warnings
  • Surf in an uncrowded area if you are a beginner.
  • Surf when the waves are small
  • Always wear a leash
  • Be kind to other surfers
