The low income energy assistance program helps individuals pay a portion of their energy bill once a year.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • LIHEAP Application
  • Copies of your pay stubs
  • Copy of your heating bill
  1. Step 1

The low income energy assistance program helps individuals pay a portion of their energy bill, prevent energy services from being turned off by paying an amount to avoid disconnection, weatherization for your home to help reduce your energy use, and they offer counseling services on how to budget your money more efficiently.

  2. Step 2

Each state has its own income requirements that they use to determine eligibility for assistance. To find out if you qualify for help I will add a link in my resource’s at the bottom of this article, after you click on the (liheap link) it will take you to a page where you can choose the state you live in; once there it will ask you to choose your county and then it will provide all the information you need to see if you qualify for help.

  3. Step 3

In most states you will need to fill out an application that they send to you. They will tell you to attach a copy of your last 6-12 months pay stubs and a copy of your current energy bill along with the application and mail it back to them at the address they provide.

  4. Step 4

After they receive your application and income information, they will send you a letter stating how much financial assistance you qualify for and approximately when you can expect it. In my state they send a check to your home but in other states they might send it straight to your utility company.

  5. Step 5

Last year I received a check for $238.00 to my home. It might not sound like a lot but if you struggle to pay your heating bills like I do, this money gives me a chance to get caught up on past due bills.
