How to Remove Unwanted Hair With Sugar Wax

Do you have unwanted hair that you'd like to remove easily? Try using sugar wax. (Two popular brands of sugar wax are Moom and Nads.)

Sugar wax is easy on the skin and you're unlikely to be allergic to it even if you have sensitive skin (though always test first). It makes removing unwanted hair easy, and relatively painless because it sticks just to the hair and not the skin. It's not completely pain-free--no hair remover that removes the hair at the roots is--but it's a lot less painful than traditional waxing.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sugar wax like Moom or Nads
  • Muslin or denim strips
  • Popsicle stick (or similar) to spread the sugar wax
  1. Step 1

Heat the hair remover sugar wax in the microwave for about 10 seconds. Be careful--you don't want it to get hot, you just want to soften it. Alternatively, you can place the jar of hair remover sugar wax into a pan of hot water for a few minutes. This will soften it with less potential for over heating.

  2. Step 2

Test the temperature of the hair remover sugar wax before applying it. This is really important as sugar wax can get very hot very quickly, so be careful!

  3. Step 3

If your skin is oily or you've applied body lotion, smooth corn starch over your legs (rub it off until very little remains) to absorb that oil. This isn't always necessary, but it can help the hair remover sugar wax stick to the hair better.

  4. Step 4

Spread a thin layer of sugar wax in a small spot (about two inches by two inches, if you're doing your legs) in the direction of hair growth. On the legs, this is often a downward direction. You can smooth over the patch of hair remover sugar wax once or twice to help it really stick firmly to the hairs.

  5. Step 5

Cover the patch of hair remover sugar wax with a strip of muslin or denim fabric. Press down so that it adheres to the wax. Then, rub briskly to heat it and to get the wax to really stick to the fabric.

  6. Step 6

Hold the skin taught and yank (FAST) the strip of fabric opposite the direction of hair growth. So, if you applied the hair remover sugar wax downward, you'll pull the strip off from the bottom so that you pull it upward.

  7. Step 7

If the hair didn't come out, see the tips and warnings section--there are three likely causes. If it did come out, move on to a new section of your leg. Again, apply the hair remover sugar wax in a small patch and as a thin layer--this is key to getting good results. Keep working until you've removed all of the hair you want to remove.

  8. Step 8

If you have sensitive skin, you probably shouldn't put anything on the skin following using a hair remover sugar wax. But, make sure that a day or two later you exfoliate well (and continue to do so) to avoid ingrown hairs.

Tips & Warnings
  • If it's not working, that's usually because you've applied too "long" of a section of wax--try two inches by two inches or smaller. In fact, the shorter the better because it's easier to pull the strip off quickly then.
  • Another reason the hair remover sugar wax might not work as well as you hope is that you applied it too thickly. Make sure you apply only a thin layer. (This is easier if you heat the hair remover sugar wax a little.)
  • Finally, when you're applying the hair remover sugar wax, use the Popsicle stick to smooth over it in the opposite direction of the hair growth and then
  • in
  • the direction of hair growth (so, make the hairs point up and then down, for instance). This can make sure the hair is especially well coated in the hair remover sugar wax.
