Step 1
First consider if you are going to display photographs. Photographs are one of the most popular ways to personalize and decorate a fireplace mantle. The photographs can be formal, such as professional wedding photos or school photos set into nice frames. Or you can choose to display more casual and candid photos of friends and family. Another way to use photographs as decoration is to choose different sized pictures and frames, perhaps even printing some photos in black and white or sepia tones.

Step 2
Aside from photographs as decoration, a lot of people choose to add height with a larger piece on their fireplace mantle. This larger piece could be a large framed mirror, which would also add dimension and make the room look larger. Or perhaps a tall decorative vase with or without decorative plants within in. Others may choose to decorate a fireplace mantle with an old fashioned clock or a large framed piece of art.

Step 3
Lighting is a factor that many people include while decorating their mantle. Candles and decorative candle holders are common on fireplace mantles. Candles can add dimension and height to the mantle and also can become a warm source of light when used.

Step 4
Symmetry is another aesthetic feature to take into consideration when you decorate a fireplace mantle. Do you want to create a sense of symmetry by placing a large object as the center point and smaller, matching objects on either side? Or do you want your decor to be more casual without too much emphasis on symmetry?
