When pouring concrete, it is a good idea to think about how to make the pavement non-slip right at the start. There are a number of ways concrete can be prepared so it will not be slippery and it's best to do it during the original cement installation. Decide your technique before concrete is poured so your tools and materials are ready to use while cement is wet.

One of the simplest ways to prevent pavement from drying with a slippery surface is to brush an abrasive surface into the drying concrete. Sand is an inexpensive and easily available material that can be worked into the wet cement.

More elaborate designs can be created with stones, pebbles or virtually any small textured material that can be pressed into the wet concrete before it sets hard. The roughened surface will afford traction.

Another way to make a non-slip surface is by imprinting the moist cement. Textures like screens, hardware cloth, even literal images can be impressed to print designs, patterns and textures that both look decorative and roughen up the surface to make it non-slip.
