Stop a Cat from Eating Plants
Stop a Cat from Eating Plants

Plant eating is a relatively common problem with indoor cats. Unfortunately it can cause damage to both your plants and the cat. To stop a cat from eating plants you need to address both possible causes, and ways to remedy them.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Cats usually try to eat plants either out of hunger, or a natural curiosity. If your cat only seams to try to eat plants when it is out of food, hunger is the most likely source. Regular feeding consistent with the cats weight and age should remedy the plant eating.

  2. Step 2

If a cat is acting out of curiosity it will be more difficult to stop a cat from eating a plant. The first step is to try to move the plant to a place the cat can't get to it, ideally a ceiling hook.

  3. Step 3

The next option is to take double sided tape and wrap it around the pot of the plant or the area next to your plant. Cats don't like the sticky texture, and will begin avoiding the area. Once they have lost intrest remove the tape.

  4. Step 4

The next option to stop a cat from eating a plant is to make or purchase a liquid to spray onto the plant that gives it either a bitter or hot taste. You can find these products at pet stores both online and off. You can also try your own mixtures with things like lemon, bitter apple, and hot peppers.
