Before jumping into tying your shoes with the straight bar lace method, check the number of eyelets on each side of the shoe. If you have an odd number of eyelets, this look, which is popular with skaters, won't work. You won't need a longer lace to pull off this look, but you shouldn't plan on doing any vigorous exercise, as your shoes would likely slip off. You will be able to get around town on your board just fine though. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Put your foot in the shoe just to get and idea of how tight you want the tongue pressed. Take a look at how low it fits -- keep that form in mind once you start.

    • 2

Start at the bottom and pull the shoelace through the two bottom eyelet holes, entering from the top and pulling the string through the inside of the shoe. Leave about 2-3 inches of extra length on the innerside of the shoe, that is to mean, if it's the right shoe, stay long on the left, and right on the left shoe.

    • 3

Pull the strings beneath the tongue. Take the longer end of the string and pull it up from the inside of the opposite side of the shoe. It should be coming out of the eyelet on the opposite side it came down from. Now pull that down through the opposite eye. You want to create a horrizontal strip look. Don't pull too tight, but keep the strain even among the top strands.

    • 4

Take the shorter end of the string from the bottom of the shoe and pull it up through the eyelet on the same side that it came down from. Pull it across the top and push it down and through. Now you have both sides staggered with the eyelets. Continue the pattern until you reach the top or wherever you want the laces to end.

    • 5

As an option, some people like to pull the laces through the tags on the tongue. This is useful for keeping the shape of the tongue and the shoe intact. If you do that, you can either tie the knot off behind the tongue at the top. Otherwise, just tuck the remaining string back into the shoe.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep in mind, while very styling, this method is not the best for any actual sport activity. The shoes will kick off your feet if you let them. You can tighten or loosen them by pulling at every other string from the bottom and lifting the corresponding end from the top.

  • You can't tighten your shoes to a level of quality performance.
