The April showers and windiness have finally subsided. Flowers are ready to bloom with the help of the sunshine, birds and bees. When you start planting your flowers, consider growing some orchids. Here are some tips to grow healthy orchids that will last longer.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • pencil and paper to take notes.
  • browse through home and garden stores.
  • browse through gardening magazines.
  • check out orchid magazines.
  1. Step 1

Know everything about orchids before growing them. Read and educate yourself about the flower.
-Orchids don't grow well in desert areas.
-There are different kinds of orchids, such as Southern California orchids.
-Orchids are air plants, and they need lots of moisture. They need air around the roots.

  2. Step 2

Decide if you want to get tropical orchids or other kinds of orchids as well as if you want to use a greenhouse or plant them outside.

  3. Step 3

Get a tray for your orchids if you want to grow them indoors because such tray provides air circulation. Sea breeze and air movement are very important for orchids grown indoors.

  4. Step 4

Create a well-drained soil mix for potting. Bark and coconut are used for potting. Coconut lasts longer than bark. If you decide to use bark, you will need to pot again, a couple of times, as needed. Small plants tend to be weak plants.

  5. Step 5

Create your own pest control by using nontoxic and organic products.
-rubbing alcohol gets rid of pests.
-mix 1/4 of a natural dishwater liquid with a teaspoon of neem oil.

  6. Step 6

Wash your gardening tools well after each usage as well as keep your gardening tools clean after using them so that your soil doesn't get contaminated when you use your tools again at another time or another day, on other plants.
