How To Solder an RF-59 Connector to Wire

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Solder Gun
  • Tip cleaner/tinner
  • Solder (flux core preferred
  • 1/2 wet sponge
  • Flux (a flux pen is costly so plumbers flux works as well.
  • magnification light
  1. Step 1

You will want to clean the connection points of your wire and connector by applying the flux to these areas with flux brush or old tooth brush.

  2. Step 2

Then place the wire inside or on top of item your soldering to. Sometimes its tricky to hold items still while soldering ,some alligator clips, a clothes pin, or a heavy object even a rock will be helpful in securing your work.

  3. Step 3

Hold pre-heated soldering iron, preferably under, the two items point on contact. You'll want to touch them evenly then touch the solder down on opposite side of solder iron and wait for solder to melt. Almost always the wire will get hot faster than the connector so give the connector more heat. When it starts to melt run solder around all connecting points until there's a solid bead on it. Hold items real still while removing soldering iron so you dont separate them, wait for it to cool and you done! If it gives you trouble during process its probable dirty and you just glob extra flux on there with the brush.

Tips & Warnings
  • If items are dirty or tarnished use a bit of sandpaper to rough up point of contact.
  • Be patient for items to heat up, apply solder to early usually makes a mess.
  • Try to work in ventilated area when soldering
  • Purchase only lead free solder
  • Careful you lay soldering iron on burn resistant surface.
