If you have a dog that has accidents in the house, then this article is your solution to rid dog urine odors from carpets. I learned early on that sometimes the only way to rid dog urine odors from carpets is with a steam cleaner. However, you can’t just use typical steam cleaning to rid dog urine odors. Use these steps to rid dog urine odor from carpets with a steam cleaner.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Home steam cleaner
  • Liquid odor neutralizer
  • Mild dish washing soap
  • Anti-foamer
  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Large towel
  • Water
  1. Step 1

Take a large towel and soak up as much of the dog urine as you can from the carpet area.

  2. Step 2

Move all furniture out of the room that you are going to steam clean. This will keep you from having just spots of clean carpet and the rest being discolored from dirt. You want to clean the entire room, not just the dog urine spot.

  3. Step 3

In the water fill section of the home steam cleaner put one capful each of: white, distilled vinegar, liquid odor neutralizer (such as frebreeze), mild dishwashing liquid and anti-foamer.

  4. Step 4

Fill the water fill section of the home steam cleaner with warm water to the fill line.

  5. Step 5

Steam clean the entire room with the solution from step 3. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the entire carpet is steam cleaned. Go over dog urine areas twice. Allow to sit on the carpet for one hour.

  6. Step 6

Fill the water fill section of the home steam cleaner with nothing but warm, clear water.

  7. Step 7

Steam clean the entire room again with just the warm clear water. Allow to air dry for 24 hours prior to replacing the furniture. Keep the dog out of the area. This should get rid of dog urine odor that is in your carpet and carpet padding.

Tips & Warnings
  • Crate train your puppy to reduce the chances of him urinating on the carpets later.
  • Try to steam clean dog urine filled carpets weekly to reduce bacteria and odors.
