Should you get a 720p or 1080i?

In the world of HDTV 1080p resolution is the clear winner. However it is also significantly more expensive. If you are looking to save a little money you can choose between 720p and 1080i resolution HDTVs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First consider the size HDTV you plan to purchase. For sizes smaller than 37" choose 720p. It will look the same as 1080p on the smaller size screen.

  2. Step 2

If you are planning on purchasing a larger HDTV consider what you primarily will be using your TV for.

  3. Step 3

Most modern generation video game systems have games in 720p. If you largely use your HDTV for video games you should select a 720p HDTV over a 1080i TV.

  4. Step 4

Next consider what type of programming and movies you watch most often. 1080i is shows more detail and clearer pictures than 720p. However 720p is better for action movies and sports because it handle quick motion better with out blurring.

  5. Step 5

If you have particular channels that you love to watch you should contact your cable or satellite provide to see whether the channel comes naturally in 1080i or 720p. If most of your favorite channels are in one or the other, choose that resolution.
