Diaper Cakes get people talking. If you want to give your friend or family member a unique, practical, and memorable baby shower gift, try making one of these fabulous diaper cakes to welcome the new baby's arrival.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pampers Swaddlers or Pampers brand diapers - 40-110 diapers depending on the size of the cake you want to make
  • Baby Supplies (actual items vary according to what you want your cake to look like)
  • Baby Shampoo
  • Baby Powder
  • Diaper Cream
  • Cotton Swabs
  • Baby Wash Cloths
  • Receiving Blankets
  • Baby Bottles
  • Baby Toys
  • Teddy Bear
  • Rubber Bands
  • large piece of sturdy cardboard
  • pretty wide ribbons
  • cellophane for baskets or netting
  • large bow
  • wooden dowels

Decide on your theme and gather your ingredients. You can get all of these at a local baby supplies store and craft store, at a Walmart, Kmart, or even your local Dollar store if you are on a tight budget.

  2. Step 2
    Pretty Cake Platter

Decide how big you want your diaper cake to be and cut a circular base out of sturdy cardboard. Alternately, you can use a pretty glass cake plate or even a pizza pan.

  3. Step 3

To form the top of the diaper cake, roll up a diaper, starting at the 'open' top end. Wrap a rubber band around the rolled diaper to stop it from unrolling.

This will form the center of the layer; an alternative is to use a baby bottle instead.

  4. Step 4
    Gift Certificate
    Gift Certificate

Place a gift certificate from your place of choice on the cardboard base, glass cake platter, or pizza pan.

  5. Step 5

To make the first (bottom) tier, place a baby bottle or bottle of baby lotion in the center of the cake platter (on top of the gift certificate) and add about 7 diapers around the bottle or lotion and secure with one big rubber band to hold it in place.

  6. Step 6

Form a 2nd ring of rolled up diapers with the remaining 11-12 diapers by placing them around the 1st ring of diapers. Complete it by placing a large rubber band around the entire thing.

  7. Step 7

For the final ring of the first tier of diapers, tightly roll up 18 to 20 diapers but secure each one with ribbon instead of runner bands. Then place them around the second ring to form a third ring. Take a large, 1/2 to 1 inch wide ribbon and tie it around the entire tier to hold them all together in a circle shape. Some people use a large rubber band first and then cover the rubber band with the ribbon. This is just a matter of personal preference.

  8. Step 8

To create additional tiers, proceed as for the first tier. You won't have to add a bottle of lotion or baby bottle in the center of this tier since the bottle from the first tier will be sticking up. Simply place the rolled up diapers around the bottle of the first tier. Secure the bottles with ribbons as before. Remove a few diapers and add some surprise gifts in their place, such as a rolled up onesie, receiving blanket, or baby bottle.

  9. Step 9

To form the top tier of the diaper cake, use a baby bottle, a rolled up baby blanket, or rolled up diaper. Wrap a rubber band around the rolled diaper or blanket to keep it from unrolling. Cover the rubber band with a ribbon.

  10. Step 10

To secure the tiers together, carefully insert 1 or 2 wooden dowels through each layer to hold together.

Add little baby items like rattles, bottles, lotions, receiving blankets, miniature stuffed animals, baby towels, onesies, wash cloths, toys, etc. Place them between the folds of the diaper, tuck the larger items into the outer layer of ribbon and add bows to them.

  12. Step 12

To complete the diaper cake, wrap it in cellophane or netting. Tie at the top with a bow, flower, or add a stuffed animal to the top of the cake.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try making a diaper cake without rolling the diapers. This is a great way for new parents because they won't have to unroll each individual diaper. The diapers are also easier to lay flat after this style of cake has been undone.
  • For a "green" diaper cake, use cloth diapers instead of disposable ones.
  • Diaper cakes can be decorated to match any theme you want.
  • Diaper cakes make great gifts at the hospital, at a baby shower, after an adoption, or anytime before or after a new baby arrives.
  • Don't eat your diaper cake.
  • Keep away from children who may think they can eat your diaper cake.
