In today's job market you need to stand out in every way possible. The first step to doing that is writing an awesome resume. The following articles will give you a fighting chance at that new job.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • printer
  • cover letter
  • thank you letter
  1. Step 1

Your resumes only purpose in life is to land you an interview and that's how it should be written. The HR guy spends less than 20 seconds on each resume on average. So you want to grab there attention immediately.

  2. Step 2

Start with your contact information. Your name, phone number and email should be promptly and strategically positioned in the top right corner. This makes it easy to find while they page through,

  3. Step 3

Next is the most important part the objective. This needs to grab the employers attention and separate you from the hoard. It should identify the job you seek and the skills you would utilize in it. You want to customize this section for each place you apply to.

  4. Step 4

Your employment history and experience comes to bat next. This is normally done in a reverse chronological manner. Make sure to explain any gaps in employment or you might have ended the race.

  5. Step 5

The next section should cover your skills. Briefly list your job related skills in order of importance and relitivity. You should also discuss your area of expertise.

  6. Step 6

Now you should list your education from grade school to highest point completed. You can also put down any kind of advanced education, training, certification or licenses. If you haven't completed a degree put down the expected date of completion.

  7. Step 7

If you have any affiliations with any organizations make sure you put them down. Being a member of an association related to your field speaks volumes about you in a single sentence. Non related affiliations can also land you the job. For example lets say you worked at the food pantry that still says plenty about you.

  8. Step 8

To round it all up you need a solid summery. The first sentence should quickly describe your profession. Followed by a loose or specialized expertise. Followed by how your skills make you a great candidate. Another sentence describing an appropriate trait or personal characteristic. And finally a sentence to describe your objective or interest.

Tips & Warnings
  • The resumes general theme should reiterate why you are the perfect person for this job.
  • use size 12 font in simple lettering
  • begin sentences with action verbs
  • laser printing comes out better than ink jet.
  • Don't carry on about anything in general, be clear and concise .
  • Don't toot your own horn to much or the employer will get a negative image.
  • make sure your triple check grammar and spelling.
  • make sure your resume is bulleted
  • don't make it more than two pages in length

on 7/27/2009 A killer resume starts with proper grammar, and "writing a awesome resume" won't cut it. Neither will "your resumes only purpose" and "grab there attention", etc. Brother Steveo, get a copy of "The Little, Brown Handbook" and study it. And be sure to use your spell checker.
