Assume the Locust Pose in Yoga

The locust pose, or Salabhasana in Sanskrit, is an energizing pose that strengthens the abdominal muscles.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Lie on your stomach with your feet together and stretching back, away from your body.

  2. Step 2

Stretch your arms alongside your body with your palms facing up.

  3. Step 3

Raise your arms off the floor, keeping them parallel to the floor.

  4. Step 4

At the same time, raise your head, chest and legs off the ground, simultaneously stretching them up and away from the center of your body.

  5. Step 5

Balance on your abdomen, breathing steadily.

  6. Step 6

Practice until you can hold the posture comfortably for about 30 seconds.

Tips & Warnings
  • Breathe! Don't succumb to the temptation to hold your breath while contracting your muscles and balancing on your abdomen.
  • To avoid injury, you should always listen to your body when doing a yoga pose, and not push yourself beyond your limits. When in doubt, consult a doctor.
  • If you're serious about learning yoga, a teacher is invaluable for helping you fine-tune your position in all the poses for maximum benefit.
