Pediatric Palliative Care helps identify the best methods of treatment for the pain and discomfort of children suffering from chronic medical illnesses. This type of care can be provided along with curative and life-prolonging treatment. Here's how to get Pediatric Palliative Care and improve the quality of life for your child.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Involve Your Entire Family in the Decision:

Be sure to discuss with your family and sick child that you are considering a new treatment. Depending on the age and maturity level, your child may or may not be able to understand the medical terms, or why he is experiencing such pain. It's hard for kids to comprehend that the treatments are meant to make them well. Usually older kids are more able to understand the meaning of disease and the treatment aspect of it; and some have experienced a loved ones death, so they can grasp what that means. For younger kids, sometimes medical picture charts can help when explaining things such as tests ,treatments and pain levels.

  2. Step 2

Speak with Your Primary Care Physician For A Referral:

Your child's primary doctor will need to refer you for Pediatric Palliative Care services. During your meeting with the doctor ask for an update on the status of your child's illness and decide whether or not you desire curative treatments for your child such as CPR if his heart were to stop, or the use of a feeding tube if he was unable to eat.

  3. Step 3

Meet with The Pediatric Palliative Care Team:

Before meeting with the Pediatric Palliative Care team make a list of questions and concerns you may have regarding what to expect from their services. The care team is made up of experts in several different areas of health care such as doctors, pharmacists, social workers and therapists. You can expect the Pediatric Palliative Care team to communicate openly and honestly with you regarding your child's illness and care.
