Have you ever wondered how you can help birds survive in the winter? Make suet for a bird feeder. It's easy and a little goes a long way!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • suet
  • birdseed
  • sunflower seeds
  • berries
  • peanut butter
  • foil trays
  1. Step 1

Buy suet (fat) from a local butcher or when butchering meat ask the butcher to save the suet for you to use.

  2. Step 2

Melt the suet (fat) on the stove over a low to medium heat in an old pot. I used an old pot that I could discard afterwards because the suet is greasy.

  3. Step 3

Once the suet is liquefied add birdseed, berries, sunflower seeds or peanut butter.

  4. Step 4

    Mix the contents together.

  5. Step 5

Pour the mixture into several foil trays that are placed on cookie sheets for extra support. Or you can use cake pans lined with foil.

Place the cooled suet block in a suet feeder that you can purchase at a local store. Or if you can't purchase a suet feeder place the block in an old potato bag.

Hang the feeder in a tree or on a fence. Make sure the feeder is high enough that other wildlife cannot eat the suet.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be careful when melting the suet (fat) it is extremely hot and can cause burns.
  • Supervise the suet at all times to eliminate the chances of a fire.
