Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. Presently, mothers are lavished with gifts and sentiments of love from their children. They are often taken out for brunch to celebrate the day.

Early Egyptians began the celebration of Mother's Day but in a different sense. An annual festival was held to honor the goddess Isis, who was considered the mother of the pharaohs. Ancient Romans celebrated the goddess Cybele, also known as the Greek goddess Rhea, who was the mother to most of the major deities worshiped at that time. Other cultures with similar beliefs celebrated their own mother figures... Gaia - the Earth goddess and Meter oreie - the Mountain goddess.

Well Mother's Day has changed dramatically from the ancient days of large festivals with sacrifices, battle games, and elaborate arts and crafts. Modern day Mother's Day began in the US as a call to mothers to protest the killing of their sons during the Civil War by celebrating peace and motherhood. It eventually was recognized by the US government in 1914 by Woodrow Wilson.

Today, Mother's Day is celebrated worldwide. Each country has its own variation and customs. In the United States, family activities honoring Mom are the custom. Older children can make their own cards and pick out their gifts for Mom. However, younger children often need some help. Make a Card

Nothing is more special to a mother of small children than their art work. There will always be a place on the refrigerator and in the scrapbook.

Sit down with young children with some cardstock, paints, markers, crayons, glitter, glue, stickers, etc. Be prepared for a mess to clean up, but it will be worth it when Mom opens the card and there are tears in her eyes.

      Flowers

Store bought flowers are nice but... it's spring. Take the kids for a walk in a field and pick a bouquet of flowers. If you don't have a garden yourself, ask friends and family if the kids can pick a few from their gardens.

Place the flowers in a vase with a bow around it. What a nice gift.

      Pictures

Mothers love pictures of the kids but often are not in any of the pictures because she is the one taking them. Spend the day with Mom and the kids walking in parks or on a beach taking pictures of her with the kids. Bring some props. Try not to be too formal, but just great candid shots to remember the day for those scrapbooks.

      Food

Restaurants are nice but often crowded on Mother's Day. Young children are asked to sit and behave. This has the possibility of getting rather stressful so... pack a picnic instead. A few plates, sandwiches, and a drink may not be a gourmet meal but the family is together, the kids can be kids, and Mom still doesn't have to clean the kitchen afterwards.

Tips & Warnings

  • It doesn't take a lot of $$$ to make Mother's Day special.

  • Don't leave a mess for Mom to clean up at the end of the day! Give her the day off!!!
