Roller skating has been around since as early as 1884, and with the recent revival of Roller Derby, everyone is starting to jump into the fun! Roller Derby consist of a few basic rules and a whole lot of fun (and exercise). Join a team today and get rolling!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

A roller derby bout consists of 10 people (two teams of 5 people). Each team consists of 1 jammer (who wears the star on their helmet and scores points for their team), 1 pivot (who stays at the front of the pack and monitors the speed), and 3 blockers (who work together to help their jammer through the opposing teams pack to the front).
*The only time there will be less than 10 people on the track is when someone is placed in the penalty box.

  2. Step 2

Each bout is comprised of three 20-minute (or two 30-minute) periods. Each period has an unlimited number of jams that last up to 2 minutes each.
In between each jam the teams have 30 seconds to line up -if the entire team has not lined up by the blowing of the whistle, those out of line have to sit the jam out.

  3. Step 3

The first whistle means it is time for the pack to start, the next two short whistles signal the jammer to start.

  4. Step 4

Four whistles signal the end of the jam, which usually happens after two minutes. They can also call off the jam at anytime after the lead jammer 'status' has been earned. The lead jammer is the first to make it through the pack legally/without penalty.

  5. Step 5

There are several illegal moves that the team can be penalized for: kicking, grabbing, tripping, pushing, fighting, using elbows, and blocking the jammer while 20 feet or more away from the pack.

Tips & Warnings
  • Roller Derby can be a family event, just choose the bout locations wisely. Many YMCA facilities hold bouts for local teams and are family-friendly, whereas some locations can be rougher and not appropriate for children.
  • While roller derby is fun, it is also an aggressive, full-contact sport. Always use protective gear and caution!
