Casting on

To begin any knitting project including a scarf, you need to be able to cast on stitches. Although there are various methods for doing this, I have found the following method to be by far the easiest.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yarn
  • Knitting needle
  1. Step 1

First decide how wide you would like to make your scarf in order to determine the number of stitches to cast on. Or simply follow the recommendations on your pattern. A good ballpark to start is 60-70 stitches. Without a pattern, you will need to determine gauge. Gauge is a measure of how many stitches are contained in an inch of knitting. Everyone knits differently. After casting on knit for an inch or so and then count the number of stitches per inch. Multiply the number of stitches per inch by the number inches wide you would like your scarf to be. For example if you knit 8 stitches per inch and you would like your scarf to be 8 inches wide then you need to cast on 64 stitches.

  2. Step 2

    Step 1
Hold the yarn between your thumb and your forefinger of your left hand as shown in the picture.

  3. Step 3

    Step 2
Holding onto the yarn with your right hand, rotate your thumb and forefinger down and pinch your fingers together.

  4. Step 4

Bring your finger and thumb up holding the yarn to make a loop.

  5. Step 5

Put one knitting needle inside the loop you have now created.

  6. Step 6

With right hand on the knitting needle, take yarn in your left hand and rotate yarn upwards using the thumb and forefinger of your left hand.

  7. Step 7

Place your needle through the loop you have created with your left thumb.

  8. Step 8

Grab the the loop of yarn you have created with your right forefinger and pull through the left thumb loop.

  9. Step 9

Release your right thumb and pull the cast on stitch tautly to the needle. You should now have 3 stitches on your needle. Continue until you have the right number of stitches on your needle.
