Make Healthy Food for Your Dog
Make Healthy Food for Your Dog

Making healthy food for your dog is easy and good for them. Have you ever tasted commercial dog food? Neither have I, but it smells awful. Always check with your vet before beginning.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make an appointment with your veterinarian and discuss your nutritional concerns. Ask the vet for a multi vitamin for your pet to ensure they are getting their proper nutrients. Calcium is usually the biggest concern when making your own pet food. At the consultation, based on the weight and health of your dog, the vet will either suggest a specific multi-vitamin or tell you how much of the following supplements your dog requires: calcium, fish oil and vitamin E. He/she may suggest other supplements, but those are the basic ones.

  2. Step 2

Make sure your dog is getting a diet consisting of
1/3 protein from chicken, turkey, beef or eggs.
1/3 grains such as oatmeal or brown rice.
1/3 vegetables-carrots, broccoli, lettuce, string beans etc (avoid corn, potatoes, mushrooms, onions and garlic)

  3. Step 3

1 lb ground chicken, turkey or beef which can be boiled, broiled, fried always removed excess fat.
1 whole egg hard boiled or scrambled
1/2 cup cooked brown rice or cooked oatmeal
    1/2 cup pureed vegetables
    Vet recommended supplements
Mix ingredients together, feed your dog, refrigerator excess for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.

  4. Step 4

There are many foods that need to be avoided because they can be toxic to your dog:
NO Chocolate or Caffeine - Toxic
NO Fatty Meats-can cause problems with their pancreas
NO Grapes or Raisins-can cause kidney damage
    No Mushrooms
NO Onions or Garlic-can cause anemia
NO Potatoes-can affect digestive, nervous & renal systems
NO Raw Eggs-can cause skin problems, may carry salmonella
    NO Raw Fish
    NO Added Salt
NO Baby Food-many commercially prepared baby foods contain onion powder
    NO Alcohol-affects central nervous system
NO White Rice or White Bread

Tips & Warnings
  • Use lactose-free milk made for dogs
  • Stay with limited amounted of liver-too much liver can cause Vitamin A toxicity
