How to Make Hamster Hammocks

Hamsters are fun pets to have, and require plenty of space and toys to explore and run around. They also love little cozy ares to sleep and burrow. A hamster hammock made out of glued together rope can be hung from either side of the cage, and can provide a hamster with a cool area to sleep.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Length of small coil rope, measuring around 45 inches in length. (also make sure it is nontoxic with no sharp materials)
    • Super glue or other craft glue that is pet safe
    • Scissors
    • Two plastic self-adhesive hooks, medium size
    • Cotton or newspaper shreds
      • 1

Make sure the rope you buy has coils that are about 1/2 inch thick, and there is no sharp or harmful material on the rope. Lay down the length of rope on a flat surface.

      • 2

Measure out 12 inches of the rope. Pick up the piece of rope, and bend it perpendicular to the measured out length. Measure out three inches of this bent rope, and cut the rope. Next, measure out another three inches of the rope, and cut. Repeat this procedure until you only have fifteen inches of rope left. Leave these fifteen inches to the side.

      • 3

Take a cut piece of the three inch rope and bring it over to the original bent piece of three inches, that is still connected to the straight twelve inches of rope. Use the super glue to draw a thick line of glue across the side of the three-inch cut piece. Press it firmly, parallel, to the bent piece of three inches, matching up the edges. Hold the pieces together until securely glued.

Take another piece of the cut three-inch rope, and draw a thick line of super glue across the side of it. Press it firmly, parallel, to the piece of three-inch rope you just glued, matching the edges. Hold the pieces together until securely glued.

      • 5

Repeat this process with all of the cut three-inch pieces of rope, until you have none left. Take the piece of rope that is fifteen inches long, and measure out three inches from the edge. Bend it backward. Glue the three inches to the last piece that was glued, and hold securely. Now, the hamster hammock should resemble a little rope swing with twelve inches of rope hanging off either side.

      • 6

Make sure the hamster hammock is dried completely. Decide where you want the hammock to hang in the hamster cage. A good place is the corner of the cage, out of the way of other things.

      • 7

Attach one of the plastic self-adhering hooks to the outside of the cage, close to where you want the hamster hammock to hang. Repeat this procedure with the other hook, on the other side of the cage. Take one end of the remaining twelve inches of rope, and tie it in a secure knot around the hook. Take the other remaining twelve inches of rope, and tie it in a secure knot around the other hook.

Make sure the hamster hammock swings a little, and is not too far off the ground, so the hamster can get into it. Add shredded newspaper or cotton to the hammock, to make it more comfortable. Place your hamster in the cage and make sure it can get in and out of the hammock, and that the hammock holds the hamster's weight.
