Fluorescent lights produce bright, clear light and are both efficient and economical to run. Though they come in many shapes and sizes, fluorescent lights are commonly found in work areas and shop lights. When a bulb flickers and burns out, it is time for a replacement. Installing a new fluorescent light bulb takes little time and requires no special tools.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Unplug the shop light. Make sure the light is cool to the touch before trying to remove the old bulb.

  2. Step 2

Lightly grasp the fluorescent bulb with two hands. Twist it gently until the two prongs at both ends of the bulb line up with the slots in the holders. Pull gently to remove the light.

  3. Step 3

Remove the new fluorescent bulb from its packaging. Hold it up to the shop light and insert the prongs into the slots in each end of the shop light. Twist the bulb gently to lock it into place.

  4. Step 4

Plug in the light to test the new bulb.

Tips & Warnings
  • Change a fluorescent bulb when it darkens, burns out, flickers or flashes on and off.
  • Fluorescent bulbs contain a small amount of mercury. Be careful not to break or damage the glass while removing or installing the bulb. Check your local recycling agency rules for how to safely dispose of your old fluorescent bulbs.
