How to Assume the Hero Pose in Yoga

The hero pose, or Virasana in Sanskrit, is a great pose for energizing your tired legs. And with a little practice, this is a good pose for performing meditation.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Leotards
  • Exercise Towels
  • Sticky Mat
  • Yoga Video
  1. Step 1

    Sit on your heels with your legs tucked underneath you. Place your knees together and facing forward, not splayed out.

  2. Step 2

    Lift your buttocks slightly so that you can move your feet apart, placing them just on either side of your buttocks. Keep your knees together.

  3. Step 3

    Place the palms of your hands flat against the soles of your feet, your fingers pointing in the same direction as your toes.

  4. Step 4

    Stretch your torso up and look straight ahead.

  5. Step 5

    Practice until you can hold the pose for several minutes at a time.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you cannot get into the position comfortably, try putting a folded blanket under your legs or between your feet and under your buttocks.
  • To avoid injury, you should always listen to your body when doing a yoga pose and not push yourself beyond your limits. When in doubt, consult with a doctor.
  • If you're serious about learning yoga, a teacher is invaluable for helping you fine-tune your position in all the poses for maximum benefit.
