Have you ever needed to roll a whole bunch of dice for a complex damage roll but not had enough d8's to do it at once? Well, no more! In fact, you can ditch the dice altogether (as long as the DM understands that you're not cheating - DON'T CHEAT). Today you'll learn some concepts towards making an excel file which can take care of all of your dice rolling needs. Let's get creative!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Microsoft Excel (2007)
  • Time
  • Desire
  • Wizard Hat
  1. Step 1

Create a new excel file. Open the program. File → save as → "DiceRoll" or whatever you want to call the file. (NPC-Killer)?

  2. Step 2
    The Formula

    The Formula

Generate Random Numbers. Select a cell, (Let's use A1 for this example). Type (without the quotes) "=RANDBETWEEN(1,x)". For "x" place the number of sides that the die has. For a d8, x=8... for a d12, x=12, and so on. For the standard d20 the formula would read "=RANDBETWEEN(1,20). Hit the enter button.

  3. Step 3
    Cursor to Corner.

    Cursor to Corner.

Generate more dice! Re-select the cell (a1) and hover your cursor over the bottom right corner until you see what looks like a plus sign (+). Click and hold down the click, and drag your mouse straight down as many cells as you'd like to have dice. If you drag down to cell a8 and release you will have 8 dice. All individually randomized.

  4. Step 4
    Drag.

    Drag.

Select another cell, away from the other ones (say, c3) and hit the "delete" key to roll your dice at the same time. (NOTE: Not the "backspace" key). Each time you hit the key you will re-roll that number of dice.

  5. Step 5

"delete" from empty cell to roll.

Play! You're ready to do multiple rolls with ease. Just make sure your DM gives your computer-dice the okay for gameplay.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can do this even for 100 sided dice.
  • If you're going to build a re-usable spreadsheet you will want to put "d8" or "d20" as a column header so you know what dice you are rolling.
