Things You'll Need:
- Creativity
- Artwork
- Something to carry your artwork in
- confidence
-
Step 1
Gather all your work to view it side by side. It is easier to choose which pieces you like better if you can see them all at once, and compare them next to each other.
-
Step 2
Remove the work you dislike, or are not proud of. You won’t be as confident and if you aren’t confident in your work, the reviewer won’t be either.
-
Step 3
Make sure to include a variety of styles. You may specialize in photography, but you should showcase drawings, sculptures, or anything else you have to show that you are a well rounded artist.
-
Step 4
Narrow your work down a little more by making sure your work has good composition, good use of color, and is appealing to the eye. Don’t just use the work of your favorite models. You have to make sure the right techniques have been used as well.
-
Step 5
Once you’ve chosen the amount of pieces you need, usually 10-15, it is time to prepare the pieces for showing. (Ex: Mounting, matting, wrapping, cleaning) Don’t wait until the week before to do this. You want your work to be show-ready in advance. This way you aren’t rushing, and when you have more time you are less likely to make mistakes.
-
Step 6
When your work is completely ready it is time to put your work in something easy to carry. (Ex: portfolio case, box, wheeled suitcase, wheeled cart) You don’t want to be struggling to carry all your work. You will look unprepared, and you could drop or damage your work.
-
Step 7
Have someone else review your portfolio. (Ex: Art teacher, professor, instructor) Ask them to criticize your work honestly. As an artist you have to be able to take criticism well, and good criticism will allow you to make changes in your portfolio.
-
Step 8
Make sure you put your pieces in the carrying case in the opposite order you want to take them out. You want to be very organized when pulling pieces out to show the reviewer. You want to know what’s coming next so you can be prepared to talk about it before it is completely visible to the assessor.
-
Step 9
Finally, dress nice, and make sure your hair is out of your face. You want to be just as confident in yourself as you are in your work. Make sure your clothing fits well. You don’t want to distract your viewer by pulling at your clothes, or having your clothing ride up in the wrong places.
