How to Store Mineral Makeup

Consumers often wonder how to store mineral makeup because according to manufacturers and vendors, mineral makeup has an indefinite shelf-life. Mineral makeup is theoretically made only of inert minerals that cannot harbor bacterial growth and thus is "expiration proof," even without adding cosmetic preservatives. However, many if not most mineral makeup do still contain vegetable ingredients such as corn starch, or moisture as in liquid products. In such cases, the makeup is just as prone to bacterial growth, microbe contamination, and rancidity as any other type of makeup. This article provides important notes and instructions on how to properly read your mineral makeup ingredient label to determine how you should store your mineral makeup to avoid it from going bad. 1. Watch For Plant-Derived Ingredients, Moisture Content, and Store According to Label

    • 1

Read the full ingredient list. A lot of mineral make up actually contain vitamins, plant extracts, and corn starch (frequently labeled as zea mays, the latin name for corn). When there is any of these present, bacteria CAN grow in your mineral makeup products, especially those without chemical preservatives. Also, any liquid form of mineral makeup is just as susceptible to expiration and bacterial growth, so disregard the "expiration proof" marketing lingo for products like liquid foundation or liquid eyeliners. Store mineral make up in dry, cool, and dark places like you do with your normal makeup, and discard whenever you notice a change in color and odor or if your skin starts becoming sensitive to the makeup.

    • 2

If the ingredient list contain nothing but pure, inorganic, inert minerals AND the mineral makeup product is a dry powder formula instead of a liquid formula, there are no special storage instructions except for the general "keep in a cool and dry place." You don't even need to keep it away from sunlight because there are no organic material in the makeup that could alter from sun exposure.

    • 3

Avoid applying mineral makeup directly with your hands and fingers. Even with dry and 100% inert minerals, frequent contact with fingers may introduce oils, moisture, and thus bacteria growth into the container. If you need to use fingers for convenience and precision of makeup application, try getting smaller containers or use separate containers for storage vs. daily use.

Tips & Warnings
