While an external MIDI controller is recommended for use with virtual studios and audio software, it is possible to use a computer keyboard as a MIDI input device.
Some audio programs automatically support MIDI control via a standard computer keyboard while others require a software patch that associates the keyboard with the program's MIDI input system.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Music creation software
  • Standard computer keyboard
  • MIDI software patch or compatible program
  1. Step 1

Locate and install a music program that suits your needs. There are a wide range of programs available. Popular and well known programs include Propellerhead's Reason, ProTools, and Apple's Garageband and Logic. These programs are priced anywhere between $100 to $1,000 US dollars.

  2. Step 2

Install and load the software. If the program supports a standard computer keyboard as a MIDI controller you should be able to begin using it immediately. If it does not detect the computer keyboard, locate the MIDI controller options usually found in the top navigation bar of the software.

  3. Step 3

Select "Computer Keyboard" or "Use Built-in Keyboard" if the option is available. Apple's Garageband supports standard keyboards. Select "Window" followed by "Musical Typing."

  4. Step 4

Use the associated keys shown on the on-screen keyboard to play the sound associated with that particular keyboard octave and key. Each program is slightly different.

  5. Step 5

Locate a free software patch if you are using a music program such as Reason. (Reason does not support built-in computer keyboards as a MIDI input device.)

  6. Step 6

Search the Internet for "Using Computer Keyboard as Midi Input." This will bring up a list of available downloads for patches that will work with a variety of music creation programs. Locate a free patch that works with your particular operating system and music software.

  7. Step 7

Follow the patch installation and set-up instructions to begin using your standard computer keyboard as an MIDI input device.

Tips & Warnings
  • Research the audio program you want to use before downloading or buying it, to see if it is compatible with the standard keyboard. A decent MIDI input device can be purchased for under $150 dollars and will work with a wide range of programs and is far less limiting than using the computer's keyboard.
  • Music production and music creation software can cost hundreds of dollars. Always research the program carefully and consider an external MIDI controller.
